How the VA Helps Pay for Rehab

The VA can help pay for substance use and mental health treatment for eligible veterans, including care with community providers when the VA authorizes it. Eligibility, authorization, and what’s covered are decided by the VA and depend on your situation, so the answer can look different from one veteran to the next.

What Are VA Community Care Providers?

VA community care providers are health care providers outside VA facilities who treat eligible veterans when the VA authorizes that care. Veterans are sometimes referred to community providers when a service isn’t available close to home or when the VA determines community care is appropriate.

Whether you can use VA benefits for treatment with a specific provider depends on your eligibility and the VA’s authorization. Bold Steps accepts VA benefits, and our team can look at how your VA authorization applies to treatment with us.

How to Use VA Benefits for Treatment at Bold Steps

  1. Ask your VA care team or local VA medical center about your eligibility and whether the VA needs to authorize community care.
  2. Call (603) 915-4223 or use our online form so our team can review your benefits.
  3. Complete a clinical assessment so we can recommend a level of care.
  4. Coordinate a start date, along with any authorization the VA may require.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Our admissions team can walk you through each step.

Treatment Available at Bold Steps

Bold Steps offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP), an intensive outpatient program (IOP), outpatient care, and virtual IOP at both our Concord and Nashua locations. We treat addiction and mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and co-occurring conditions, often together. Bold Steps does not provide detox on-site. If you need to detox first, our team can help arrange a referral to a trusted partner.

Veterans with TRICARE and VA Benefits

Some veterans have both VA benefits and TRICARE. Which coverage applies can depend on your eligibility and your situation, and our team can talk through your options. You can read more about TRICARE coverage for rehab.
